This section showcases a collection of design explorations and unused concepts. While these projects may not have reached full implementation, they represent valuable learning experiences and demonstrate a range of design thinking.
Google Family Link September 2024
Timer Extensions, Family Conversations
This project focused on enhancing Google Family Link, a parental control app, by addressing the rigidity of its app time limits. Through user interviews with parents and children, I identified a need for greater flexibility and communication around app usage. My solution introduced a timer extension feature, allowing children to request additional screen time.
Once an app timer on a child's device has reached its limit, a notification screen appears. On this notification screen, there will be an option for the child to ‘Request time’. Parents maintain control, while potentially fostering open dialogue, promoting negotiation and understanding. Parents can quickly approve or deny the extension in the Notifications panel of their parent controls app.
This project tackled reframing Chase Bank's fraud alerts to provide a clearer and more reassuring notification experience for customers that were left confused or uncertain by them. Specifically, after confirming charges are confirmed as afraid with the bank, no further notifications are received by the user, leaving them uncertain about what actions the bank was taking (examples might be canceling the card, and if so, whether a new card was going to be processed, and when it will be issued).
By focusing on UX writing and incorporating user feedback, I aimed to address user anxiety by improving the text notification itself, the automated response, and providing a specific timeline for card replacement if the user confirms a transaction is fraudulent. Ultimately, the project demonstrated how thoughtful UX writing can potentially improve customer communication and and build trust during sensitive customer interactions.
This project aimed to enhance the user experience on Too Good To Go, a platform combatting food waste by offering Surprise Bags of surplus food. Currently, the app lacks transparency regarding food quality, hindering customers from making informed decisions, especially when purchasing from a restaurant for the first time. This uncertainty is reflected in numerous Trustpilot reviews, where users frequently cite inconsistent food quality as a source of dissatisfaction.
To address this, I introduced a "Freshness Rating" feature, enabling users to rate and search Surprise Bags by their freshness. These ratings are then displayed on the respective store pages, empowering users to make more informed choices when buying bags. This new rating also encourages businesses to maintain higher standards of food quality. Since restaurant reviews are currently not shown in the app, this new rating, in theory, should provide some transparency on the quality of food.
This project aimed to enhance Samsung's Digital Wellbeing app by addressing the limitations of its existing app timers. User research revealed a need for more customizable and effective tools to manage screen time and achieve digital detox goals. My solution introduced "Lockbox," a feature offering advanced app control with timed restrictions and user authentication for enhanced digital detox.
The Lockbox feature locks the app after a time limit is reached, and forces the user to request a time-released passcode to bypass the lock feature. This allows users to set strict lock timers and manage app usage when, how, and if they feel the need to set usageboundaries. It's about creating a healthier, more mindful relationship with your devices, so you can use them in a way that truly serves you.
This project sought to revitalize Samsung Digital Wellbeing by redesigning its interface for improved user engagement and navigation. While Samsung hasn't prioritized any major UI updates in recent years, I wanted this redesign to modernize the app and align it with current design standards. Through competitive analysis and user research, I identified key areas for improvement, including data visualization, navigation, and overall user experience.
The proposed design offers a streamlined home screen, enhanced data visualization, and intuitive navigation to empower users in managing their digital habits effectively. Despite the effort invested in this project, it's important to acknowledge that without concrete data supporting the need for a redesign or a clear indication of Samsung's willingness to prioritize any major updates for an app of this nature, the design direction never became finalized.
